The history of the present firm has its roots in the human rights firm of Thakurdin & Maharaj which commenced during 1987 in Pietermaritzburg which firm primarily represented political activists in the dark days of Apartheid. That firm evolved since then taking on other professional persons and eventually culminated in the present firm with offices in Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg. Consequently the firm has a long history having traversed the changes that took place in our country.
The firm evolved over the years from being a primarily human rights firm to a commercial practice, representing a variety of private and public entities and persons, although not renouncing the principles that formed the cornerstone of its formation.
The firm’s mission is to provide efficient and professional legal services to both private individuals and corporate entities and to enhance the capabilities of its staff (both professional and support staff) to enable them to provide a comprehensive and effective service to the communities that it serves.
In view of the firms’ history of human rights and commitment to uplift the lives of previously disadvantaged persons, it is clear from its present professional and staff complement, that it is a BEE firm (the BEE certificate is attached to the tender document itself) and all employees hail from previously disadvantaged communities. Employees of colour that were previously employed by Mr Maharaj have been retained and have been given the opportunity to grow financially with the firm, indicating a genuine and sincere effort in empowering previously marginalized persons.
