Our Mission

Our mission is to provide efficient and professional legal services to both private individuals and corporate entities and to enhance the capabilities of our professional staff to enable them to provide a comprehensive and effective service to the communities that we serve. The Firm dedicates its energies, talent, skill and expertise to provide an aggressive and effective representation of clients.

By understanding our client’s needs – and their industry and business, our practice is able to provide responsive, result-oriented service in a cost-effective manner that assists our clients in achieving their individual goals.

The law firm has extensive litigation, finance, corporate and commercial law experience and we have managed challenging transactional work and trials using a project management approach which is integrated with the legal procedures and processes as well as best practice. 

History of the firm

The history of the present firm stems from the roots of the human rights firm of Thakurdin & Maharaj which commenced during 1987 in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. The firm represented primarily political activists in the dark days of Apartheid. That firm evolved since then taking on other professional persons and eventually culminated in the present firm with offices situated in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa Zulu Natal and Johannesburg, Gauteng. Consequently the firm has a long history having traversed the changes that took place in our country
The firm evolved over the years from being a primarily human rights firm to a commercial practice, representing a variety of private, public, state owned entities and individuals, whilst acting with the principles that formed the cornerstone of its formation

Affirmative Action and BEE Policy

In view of the firm’s history of human rights and its commitment to the upliftment of the lives of previously disadvantaged persons, Dev Maharaj & Associates INC is a proudly 100% black owned  level 1 B-BBEE firm  and all its employees hail from previously disadvantaged communities. Employees of colour that were previously employed by Mr Dev Maharaj have been retained and have been given the opportunity to grow financially with the firm, indicating a genuine and sincere effort in empowering previously marginalised persons

We believe that a client-centred focus requires that firm’s become knowledgeable about the client’s business, industry, objectives, organizational structure, competitors, threats, and organisational values and culture. We accomplish this by doing more secondary research about a client’s industry and the company itself, as well as gathering research. The best way to conduct this deep dive is not only by performing company and forensic investigations but also by interacting with the clients themselves through talking to them, visiting their facilities and meeting their key personal.
